British Eventing has confirmed “with the deepest sadness” that rider Sarah Yorke, 37, died following a fall while competing at the Aston-le-Walls Horse Trials on Friday, 8 August 2025.
Sarah Yorke Accident
Yorke was competing in the BE100 class when she fell at fence three. Medical professionals were on the scene immediately, but despite their efforts, she could not be saved. Her horse, MGH Hera, was examined by on-site veterinarians, walked back to the stables, and was found to be uninjured.
The final day of the Aston-le-Walls (3) fixture, scheduled for 9 August, was cancelled out of respect. The venue will proceed with an unaffiliated showjumping and cross-country schooling day tomorrow.
This was Yorke and the Irish-bred mare’s first competition at the BE100 level as a partnership, following a successful run at BE90 events, including a win at Swalcliffe Park last month. Yorke had previously competed at BE100 level with another horse, Ringfort L’Allegro.
British Eventing Chief Executive Rosie Williams paid tribute, saying:
“On behalf of everyone at British Eventing, I would like to express our deepest condolences to Sarah’s family and friends. The thoughts of the entire eventing community are with them at this incredibly difficult time.”
British Eventing has announced that a full review of the incident will be carried out in line with established safety protocols. The organization is encouraging riders, officials, and supporters to seek support during this difficult time, with the British Eventing Support Trust helpline available 24/7 at 07780 008877.
Yorke’s demise has sent shockwaves through the eventing community, where she was known for her dedication, sportsmanship, and love for her horses.
