The Wylie Independent School District is mourning the loss of longtime bus driver Lupe Garcia, 64, who was killed in an early morning incident Tuesday at the district’s bus barn.
According to Abilene police, Garcia was walking in the area when he was struck by a bus moving at a low rate of speed. No students were on board the vehicle at the time of the accident. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
Garcia was a well-known and respected member of the Wylie ISD family, having served the district for years as a dedicated bus driver. Beyond his work with the school system, he was active in the community, frequently refereeing youth sports events around the Abilene area.
In a statement, Wylie ISD expressed condolences to Garcia’s loved ones. “Our thoughts are with our employee and their family,” the district said, adding that it is cooperating fully with authorities while also conducting an internal review of the incident.
Abilene police are continuing their investigation but have indicated that the death is being considered accidental at this time.
Funeral arrangements for Garcia will be shared once they become available.
