It is with shattered hearts and unimaginable sorrow that we share the passing of Hayden Baker, a remarkable young man whose light touched so many in his 17 years. Hayden, a senior at Lewis Central High School, tragically lost his life following a motorcycle accident on Saturday, October 18, when he was struck from behind by a pickup truck. The driver fled the scene. Authorities believe alcohol was a contributing factor. Despite every effort from his medical team at UNMC, Hayden was declared brain dead on October 21st at 2:28 PM.
Hayden was so much more than a student. He was a son, a brother, a cousin, a friend, and a dreamer. He was just months away from graduating early—a testament to his work ethic and determination. Hayden was already laying the foundation for a bright future, building his dream welding business and proudly owning his motorcycle in memory of his late “motorcycle grandpa.” His passion, his drive, and his heart set him apart.
Hayden’s life was rooted in family. He was his mom’s helper, his dad’s sidekick in the garage, and his little sister’s protector. He checked on his grandma constantly, always ready to lend a hand or a smile. Known for his quick wit and goofy plans, Hayden had a unique ability to lift the mood in any room. He made us laugh, even in the darkest of moments.
In his final act of selflessness, Hayden—an organ donor by choice—will save and improve the lives of others. Though nothing can take away the pain of losing him, it gives us comfort to know that Hayden’s beautiful heart will continue to beat in someone else’s chest, and that his legacy of compassion will live on.
To everyone who has reached out—thank you. Your prayers, your messages, your love—every bit of it means the world to our family. Please continue to lift up Karla, Karen, Shelby, and Westly as they navigate this heartbreaking loss. We ask for continued respect, patience, and privacy as organ donation arrangements proceed. Service details will be shared when the time is right.
Hayden, your life was short, but your impact was deep. We love you forever. Ride free.
