Friend of Highway 39 Shooting Victim Speaks Out to Clear Misconceptions

The community of Weyburn is reeling after the tragic death of 44-year-old Tanya Myers, who was struck and killed by a bullet while traveling along Highway 39 on Friday night.

Her longtime friend, Andrea Morrice, was driving the vehicle at the time of the incident and is now speaking out to honor Tanya’s memory and to correct what she says are misconceptions about what happened.

Andrea, who has been processing the trauma of losing her friend so suddenly, reached out to the World-Spectator on Monday to share her perspective. She emphasized that contrary to speculation, the bullet did not come through a car window.

“I was the driver of the vehicle on Friday night,” Andrea explained. “I’m not sure who made the statement that there was a loud crack, but it certainly wasn’t me. It was like a bomb went off in my car and suddenly my friend was in pain. Since the bullet went into her back, I had no idea where the pain was coming from. There was no broken glass of any sort, therefore it definitely was not the crack of a window.”

Andrea stressed that neither she nor Tanya had enemies and that the two women were not targeted, unless by a tragic case of mistaken identity.

“Tanya was a natural healer who helped me through the last seven or eight years, but I’ve known her for nearly 30. Our last day together could not have been more perfect—we laughed, we shared stories, bought gifts for our pets. Tanya had a heart of gold and only did good in this world. She healed, she loved, and she gave. Her family and her cats meant everything to her. She had no enemies. Nobody meant to do this to her. We need answers as to why it happened, but I’m not sure we’ll ever get them.”

The fatal shooting occurred around 8 p.m. on Friday, September 12, as Andrea and Tanya traveled northwest of Weyburn in a black Ford Explorer. The vehicle was struck by a bullet near the Richardson Pioneer and Viterra grain terminals. Tanya died at the scene.

The Saskatchewan RCMP Major Crimes Unit has been leading the investigation. Insp. Ashley St. Germaine confirmed that investigators have received numerous tips from the public, many prompted by online sharing and media coverage.

“We recognize this is the result of information shared online and through our news partners. It shows the public wants to help, and we appreciate this greatly,” St. Germaine said.

Police are asking anyone who may have been in the area to come forward—whether hunting, target shooting, driving, or with dash cam footage from the time of the incident.

RCMP also urge homeowners and businesses along Highway 39 into Weyburn and Highway 13 to check security cameras or doorbell footage from 7:45 to 8:30 p.m. on September 12 for any unusual vehicles or activity.

Tips can be reported to 310-RCMP (7267), Crime Stoppers (1-800-222-8477), or 911 in emergencies.

For Andrea, the focus remains on remembering Tanya as the vibrant, compassionate person she was. While investigators search for answers, friends and family are left to grieve the sudden loss of a woman described as a true light in her community.
