A tragic discovery was made Monday morning in Vicksburg when authorities found the body of a man hanging from a tree in a wooded area near the Ameristar Casino. The victim has been identified as 36-year-old Corey Zukatis, a homeless man from Brandon, according to Warren County Coroner Doug L. Huskey.
Officials reported that Zukatis was discovered around 10:30 a.m. by an individual walking in the area. The scene was located just off the property line near the casino, in a wooded patch of land not far from the Mississippi River. Emergency personnel responded quickly, and the Warren County Sheriff’s Office secured the site as investigators began their work.
At this time, no additional information has been released regarding the circumstances surrounding Zukatis’ death. Authorities have not confirmed whether foul play is suspected, and they are awaiting further results from the coroner’s office to determine the cause and manner of death. Sheriff’s deputies and investigators with the Vicksburg Police Department assisted in processing the area, which remained closed to the public for several hours on Monday.
The discovery has sparked concern in the community, particularly given Zukatis’ status as a homeless individual. Advocacy groups and local residents note that the homeless population often faces increased risks, from exposure to the elements to challenges related to mental health and substance abuse. While investigators continue to piece together the events leading up to Zukatis’ death, community members are reflecting on the broader issues of poverty and vulnerability in Warren County and beyond.
Coroner Huskey confirmed that Zukatis’ family has been notified. Friends and relatives have begun to mourn his loss, describing him as someone who had struggled in recent years but was remembered as a son, a brother, and a friend. “Every life has value, and Corey’s passing is a tragedy for those who knew and loved him,” one family acquaintance said when reached for comment.
The wooded area where Zukatis was found is frequented by both locals and visitors, as it lies close to the casino, a major attraction in the city of Vicksburg. Law enforcement officers are reviewing surveillance footage from the area and speaking with individuals who may have seen Zukatis in the hours before his death. Authorities emphasize that the investigation remains ongoing and that more information will be shared once it becomes available.
In the meantime, community leaders are encouraging anyone struggling with homelessness or mental health issues to seek available resources. Local shelters, nonprofit organizations, and hotlines continue to offer assistance to those in need. “This incident is a reminder that there are people in our community who are hurting, often silently,” one outreach worker noted. “We must continue to provide support and compassion.”
