Authorities Identify David Maupin as Suspect Fatally Shot by Deputy in Des Moines County

The Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation has confirmed the identity of the individual who was shot and killed by a sheriff’s deputy from Des Moines County earlier this month.

At approximately 9 p.m. on August 5, deputies were dispatched to a domestic disturbance at a residence located along Iowa City Road, to the northwest of Burlington. Authorities reported that they received information indicating that a male individual, now identified as 46-year-old David Maupin, was armed with a firearm.

According to the Iowa DCI, during a verbal confrontation between the deputy and Maupin, Maupin became uncooperative and brandished a firearm. The deputy then discharged his weapon at Maupin, as stated by the DCI, and Maupin was subsequently treated for his injuries. He later succumbed to his injuries at the scene. The deputy involved did not sustain any injuries.

The identity of the deputy involved has not been disclosed, and he is currently on paid critical incident leave in accordance with the sheriff’s office policy. The Iowa DCI is conducting an ongoing investigation, and upon its completion, the results will be submitted to the Iowa Attorney General’s Office for review.
