Deng Mayar North Dakota Obituary: Omaha Student-Athlete Deng Mayar Dies in Drowning Accident

The University of Nebraska Omaha community is reeling from the devastating news of the tragic passing of Deng Mayar, a 22-year-old student-athlete on the men’s basketball team. Mayar passed away late Saturday, August 16, following a drowning incident, leaving his teammates, coaches, classmates, and loved ones heartbroken.

A Promising Athlete and Student

Deng Mayar had only recently joined the Omaha Mavericks, transferring after two seasons with Summit League rival North Dakota. During his time with the Fighting Hawks, Mayar made 15 starts and appeared in 42 games, establishing himself as a hardworking, versatile player with an unshakable dedication to his team.

His transfer to Omaha was filled with promise—a chance for a fresh start, new opportunities, and the possibility of making a lasting impact both on and off the court.

Omaha men’s basketball head coach Chris Crutchfield reflected on Mayar’s influence, saying:

“Our entire program is devastated to learn of Deng’s passing. Deng was a joy to be around and made our culture better. We will miss him greatly.”

Mayar’s presence was felt not only in his athletic ability but also in the way he connected with those around him. Known for his kindness, humility, and positive spirit, he quickly built strong relationships with teammates and peers.

Community Mourning

Expressions of grief and condolences poured in across the university and beyond. UNO Chancellor Joanne Li and Athletic Director Adrian Dowell shared a joint statement:

“We are devastated to learn of Deng’s passing. On behalf of our university community, our love and sincere condolences are with his family during this difficult time.”

The Summit League Commissioner Josh Fenton also issued a heartfelt statement:

“The Summit League and our entire membership mourn the passing of Omaha Men’s Basketball student-athlete, Deng Mayar.”

These words reflect the depth of sorrow felt not only by the Mavericks community but across the entire league.

A Life Beyond Basketball

Though basketball was a defining part of Deng’s life, those who knew him best remember much more than his athletic achievements. Teammates and coaches describe him as a young man full of life, driven by a strong work ethic and an infectious positivity. Off the court, Deng carried himself with humility and kindness, always willing to lend a hand or a word of encouragement.

For his family, Deng was a beloved son, brother, and friend whose dreams stretched far beyond the hardwood. He represented the resilience and determination that define so many student-athletes, balancing academics, training, and personal growth while inspiring those around him.

An Unimaginable Loss
The suddenness of Mayar’s passing has left many struggling to come to terms with the loss of someone so young and full of potential. The Omaha athletics department, in collaboration with university leaders, has committed to providing resources and counseling to students, staff, and athletes impacted by the tragedy.

The Gateway staff joins the chorus of voices mourning Deng’s loss. His memory will remain alive through the teammates he uplifted, the community he inspired, and the game he loved so much.
