The family of an eight-year-old boy has identified him as Jahavi Roy, who tragically died after being struck by a stray bullet while in bed at his North York apartment early Saturday morning.
According to Toronto police, officers responded to reports of gunshots near Martha Eaton Way and Trethewey Drive at approximately 12:30 a.m. Upon arrival, they found Jahavi, who was lying in bed with his mother, had been shot. He was rushed to hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
Marcell Wilson, a family friend and spokesperson, said, “There are no words that can capture the pain of losing a child in such a horrific and senseless way. An innocent life has been taken, a family is shattered.”
Detective-Sergeant Jason Davis called the incident a “cowardly, disgusting act of violence” and said every available resource in the city is being dedicated to the investigation. Two other apartment units were struck by gunfire, though no one else was injured.
There are currently no suspects or vehicle descriptions, and police are urging anyone with information to come forward.
