Stroudsburg Motorcyclist Killed After Driver Flees Scene, State Police Say

Matthew Hirsch, 31, of Stroudsburg, tragically died following a motorcycle crash on Aug. 14, after being struck by a driver who left the scene, according to the Pennsylvania State Police.

The crash occurred around 11 p.m. at the intersection of Routes 191 and 390. Troopers arriving on scene found Hirsch unconscious and without a helmet. Emergency responders from Pocono Mountain Regional EMS quickly transported him via medical helicopter to Lehigh Valley Hospital-Cedar Crest, where he was pronounced dead early Aug. 15.

Investigators found broken parts from a white Honda at the crash site and issued an alert for vehicles matching the description. Troopers later located the car at a nearby address, where witnesses reported a disturbance outside. Authorities identified the driver as 20-year-old Elijah Gonzalez of East Stroudsburg.

According to police, Gonzalez was traveling north in the wrong lane on Route 390 and remained on the incorrect side as he reached Route 191. Hirsch, riding southbound, attempted to avoid the collision but was sideswiped by Gonzalez’s vehicle, causing him to lose control of the motorcycle and be thrown from it.

State police continue to investigate the incident, and charges against Gonzalez have not yet been disclosed.
