The community is mourning the loss of Lucas Heiberg, 41, of Grand Forks, N.D., and Nathan Heiberg, 42, of Moorhead, who were fatally shot by police on Monday night during a response to a reported domestic violence incident.

Authorities report that Moorhead police were called to the 2400 block of Third Avenue North around 9 p.m. after a woman indicated that both Lucas and Nathan had assaulted her. Two children were present in the apartment. When officers arrived, the Heibergs did not respond to communication, and a firearm was discharged from within the residence. Officers called for backup and evacuated nearby apartments before SWAT entered the apartment. During the subsequent exchange of gunfire, both Lucas and Nathan Heiberg sustained fatal injuries. Lucas was pronounced dead at the scene, while Nathan succumbed shortly after being transported to the hospital.

The incident involved Fargo Police SWAT officers Sgt. Michael Anderson, Sgt. Kyle Seehusen, and Tyler Seehusen, who were assisting Moorhead police. The Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension (BCA) is investigating the use of force. The officers have been placed on critical incident leave.

No other injuries were reported. Two firearms were recovered from the apartment, and body-worn cameras captured portions of the incident.

The community extends its condolences to the families of Lucas and Nathan Heiberg during this devastating time. The BCA continues its investigation to determine the full circumstances surrounding the tragic loss of life.

This incident highlights the complexities and dangers faced during domestic violence responses and serves as a solemn reminder of the human cost in violent confrontations.
