9th August 2025 – (Atlanta) A shooting incident at Emory University in Atlanta, Georgia, on Friday resulted in the death of the shooter and left one law enforcement officer injured, according to reports. The Atlanta Police Department confirmed that the shooter is deceased and that there is no ongoing threat to the campus or surrounding area. The officer was hurt while confronting the suspect.
A shelter-in-place order was initially issued but has since been lifted, as confirmed by university officials.
Georgia Governor Brian Kemp condemned the shooting on social media, marking it as the second high-profile shooting in the state this week, following an incident at Fort Stewart on Wednesday where five soldiers were injured.
Atlanta Mayor Andre Dickens announced that DeKalb County officials were at the hospital meeting with the injured officer’s family and providing updates.
The mayor reassured the public that all 92 children at a nearby daycare located on the Centres for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) campus are safe. He empathised with parents, stating, “We wanted to come give you this message that all the children are safe.”
Authorities are collaborating with the CDC to establish a reunification site for parents and their children.
Police discovered the shooter on the second floor of a CVS store, where he had sustained gunshot wounds. Atlanta Police Chief Darin Schierbaum indicated that it is unclear whether the injuries were self-inflicted or caused by an officer.
Mayor Dickens confirmed that no civilians were injured during the incident and reiterated that the shooter is deceased.
The emotional toll was evident as Kristin Coles, a mother whose wife and toddler were in lockdown at the daycare, described her anxiety during the unfolding situation. She made a mile-long trek to reach them, expressing her deep concern for their safety. “It’s very scary. Our kids should be able to go to school without a threat to their lives,” she said.
